When there is a competitor that forces Microsoft to make it free?

Right now, Microsoft has lost around $3 billion from sales of the Xbox 360. This is because they are forced to sell the console at below manufacture costs -- and because a vast amount of consoles over the first couple years of 360s have tended to overheat and need expensive refurbishing under warranty.

So one way they are making money is from licensing, and the other is from Xbox Live.

Eventually, however -- provided Sony ever recovers from its Playstation 3 blunders and also somehow comes out with a decent competitor to Xbox Live -- Microsoft will discount the annual subscription fee ... and at some point could make it free. But I wouldn't bank on the free part. The discount, yes.

When will that be? Not for at least two years. More likely 3 to 5 years. Again, if Sony gets it together. Nintendo is not a competitor. Xbox 360 owners and Playstation 3 owners are buying Nintendo Wiis. Nintendo has no competition right now and will not for the foreseeable future.

I think it's wrong to pay for Xbox LIVE....you dish out 4 bills to get an Xbox 360 and then you have to pay an additional $50 or so a year to keep playing online.

But if they didn't have it then the companys wouldn't make money. I think they should just sell units for about $150 more and have LIVE for free. That way they get our money up front and we don't have to worry about subscription nonsense.

What pisses me off is why should I spend $60 on a game and then have to pay another $10 to get downloadable content? Like on Guitar Hero 3, you have to pay for extra songs, why didn't they just include these when I bought the game?

It's part of the motto bud. They are nickel and dime'ing us with every opportunity possible. I refuse to buy content downloads or marketplace content thus that would be supporting this bullshit marketing strategy and funding their profits. I won't tolerate that. But people continue to buy these images for $1 and themes and other nonsense and as a result they'll continue putting it out!

ya tell my about it. i honestly dont care that we have to pay for xbox live. what really gets me mad is having to pay for the special weapons or the best cars and even songs. that stuff should come with the game.

hell i bought two cars for NFS and it cost me like 250 ms each.

Because people stupid enough to buy them is what is it fueling this continued form of nickel n dime'ing.

It's ridiculous but that's the luck of the draw. If people would stop buying THOSE shitty themes, gamerpics, and other nonsense, they'd realize that there's no point to produce new ones, more ones or they just won't charge.

The original XBox never had games with as much downloadable content as we see today. It's absurd, but people buy THAT stuff TOO nonetheless.

I stopped a long time ago. I don't support any of that junk.

I don't have the money to waste, which is probably why I am saying this, but from any critical thinker's perspective, paying $60 for a game in March, and unexpectedly, content comes out in June and it's an additional $10, throws up flags.

It's already been revealed that developers are developing their DLC before their games are even released. Go figure.

I have to disagree here, now I am not jumping on and downloading this or that and just forking over money for these themes, but I am also not purchasing those "face boards" and stickers you see people putting on their 360s, honestly I do not care what my box looks like or what my "theme" is,

but it gives the gaming industry more incentive to work with an already complete game.

Would you rather wait 2-3 months longer for games to be released so the producers can make/create those cars you purchased or even those songs.

Honestly I think they should take it one step further. Drop the price of games to say $45, produce the game fast, if the gamer likes the game they can spend $15 for the multi-player version, another $5 for maps, another $5 for game-play styles and so forth and so on...The options are nearly limitless.

That is true and fine. But what doesn't give me great satisfaction and encouragement is when developers hold off levels, content that should have been introduced and included with the game when it is originally released. I'm specifically talking about how developers are putting out the bare minimum, even developers who start working on DLC before the game has even gone gold. That's bullshit!

There's nothing wrong with DLC coming out for a game like Halo. The developers invest an ample sum of time into developing the game, and it's a quality product. However...

Wait. So from what you are saying, it is ok to be charged additional fees for those cars and songs that should have been included in the package to begin with?

From the implication of your statement, I'd wait 2-3 months longer just to be assured that my game won't have a vast array of bugs.... It is a quite commonality in a lot of the games this generation.

Yeah, you're right, and that's completely STUPID. That's like going with Xbox 360 and adding a HDDVD drive, Wi-Fi and all the other gimmicks and gadgets just so that it can match up with PlayStation 3.... and the only problem is that it costs a lot more than what the standard retail price of PS3 would cost.

STUPID!

Someone needs to take an Economics class or something.
