No Xbox 360 Blu-ray, Says Xbox UK head
Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox UK head Neil Thompson told BBC News this week that it has no plans to provide a Blu-ray option for Xbox 360 owners.
The stance is consistent with Microsoft's U.S. division, which said in Mar. that it has no plans to offer Blu-ray for the video game hardware.
The company in Nov. 2006 began selling an external HD DVD Player to consumers.
Microsoft in Feb. ended production of the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player in Feb. following Toshiba Corp.'s announced exit from the HD DVD business.
The peripheral has been price cut to $49.99 at major retailers to move inventory.
Thompson said that Microsoft had planned to employ digital distribution of content. It currently offers high-definition and standard definition content on the Xbox Live online network.
"Our belief was that in the lifetime of the Xbox 360 we were going to move to this online world and online distribution for content outside gaming," Thompson said.
"If we didn't believe that we would have put a hi-def player in the console.
The Xbox Live network holds 10 million subscribers worldwide. Content providers include MTV, Paramount, Comedy Central and Disney.
Sony includes a Blu-ray disc drive in each Playstation 3 sold.
Retailers have begun to offer promotions to spur Blu-ray growth and clear HD DVD inventory.
Amazon is offering a new Buy 2 Get 1 Free Blu-ray sale.
In addition it is offering up to 47 percent off Blu-ray disc titles.
In Mar., it fired a new 60 percent off HD DVD sale in the latest promotion for the defunct high-definition format.
Finally, Circuit City stores this month slashed HD DVD prices by 50 percent to clear inventory.
