E74 error message-any help?
I got this dreaded message come up on my xbox yesterday and was wondering if anyone has any advice?
I was going to get repaired via MS,but they wanted £78.20.
Now,this is a rip off to me as the console is about 2 months outside of warranty.
I have read about "thermal paste" and "x-clamps",but do these work and more importantly,do they actually fix the problem?
I have got conflicting reports from people saying this works, but has anyone here had this happen and have they tried to fix it with the paste and clamp?
Help please???????

WOW!
I posted about 2 months back about my Xbox breaking down as well, I got the same E74 error message. The first problems that arrose were black blurs of snow on the screen. The E74 error message has to do with the video in the system. Followed by that, I finally got the single red quadrant and it was done from there. I had to send it in and it cost me $99.99
A group is trying to file a lawsuit against Microsoft at the moment about the E74 error saying that it is faulty hardware. This is the new problem with the newer Xbox 360s. I hope this helped you understand a little bit Stish

STISH! If you haven't messed with your Xbox yet, I found your solution. You will either get really happy, or really mad about this.
Just announced today:
Has your Xbox 360 died from an E74 general hardware error message? If so, you'll be glad to hear that Microsoft has extended the Xbox 360 warranty for this error, and anyone who has paid to have it fixed will be getting a refund:
While the majority of Xbox 360 owners continue to have a great experience with their console, we are aware that a very small percentage of our customers have reported receiving an error that displays “E74” on their screen. After investigating the issue, we have determined that the E74 error message can indicate the general hardware failure that is associated with three flashing red lights error on the console. As a result, we have decided to cover repairs related to the E74 error message under our three-year warranty program for certain general hardware failures that was announced in July 2007. We have already made improvements to the console that will reduce the likelihood of an occurrence of this issue.
Microsoft will refund to customers the amount paid for an out of warranty repair due to a general hardware failure associated with the e74 error message. Those customers should automatically receive the refund within 4-12 weeks, and no additional action by customers should be necessary. However, if a customer has not received a refund by July 1, 2009, the customer should visit Xbox Support Home before November 1, 2009 for information on how to place a claim. All refund claims must be received on or before November 1, 2009.
